Does this sound right to you? has done some research in which 4000 married couples revealed the lengths of their relationships before getting married, and the average is probably higher than you might expect!

It seems, most couples are waiting 4.9 years before getting married. The researchers broke it down further:

"Dated for 1.4 years (17 months) before moving in together. Then lived together for 1.83 years (22 months) before getting engaged. Then were engaged for 1.67 years (20 months) before getting married. The total average time living together before marriage totals to a whole 3.5 years."

"Some other interesting stats come out of the research—with people having two serious relationships on average before settling down with the 'One'. Plus, apparently women get married on average at the age of 30.8 (compared with 22.6 years old in the 70s)."

Grooms are also getting married later nowadays with most aged 32.7, while the average in the 70s was 24.

Nowadays, many couples don't actually feel compelled to get married, unlike our parents' generation with 83 per cent of people saying they felt no pressure according to Refinery29

Apparently, 91 per cent of couples are getting married to show their commitment to each other, and only two per cent admitted it was due to social pressures, financial reasons or out of convenience.

Even more couples, 95 per cent to be exact, said they would recommend marriage and 85 per cent said it made their relationship even stronger.

Hamish Shephard from said the findings were evidence that "marriages are becoming stronger than ever, relationships happier and more committed than ever, and couples more independent and consensual in their decisions than ever.”
