The NRL Footy Show is officially cancelled after 25 years

After 25 long years of laughs and irreverant football takes, The NRL Footy Show has officially been given the axe.

Channel Nine confirmed that the long-running rugby league program will not return next year in a newly released statement.

"It's been an incredible ride for The Footy Show," said Nine director of sport Tom Malone.

Malone then heaped praise on the crew who worked on the show over the years:

"A quarter of a century of laughs, controversy and first-class footy analysis. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this amazing era of live sports-entertainment television — from producers, editors, camera operators, the players, guests and of course the legendary hosts."

Having previously faced cancellation rumours last year, speculation came up again after the show endured poor ratings this season despite replacing former host Paul Vautin with Erin Molan.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Molan will remain with Nine and is reportedly negotiating a new contract.

It's the end of an era, footy fans, but what an era it has been.
