Two runways have been closed and there have been widespread delays and cancellations

Strong winds have caused two of three Sydney Airport runways to be closed down, resulting in widespread flight delays.

Thousands of passengers have been left stranded as domestic and international flights have been impacted.

The conditions are so extreme they caused a Qantas flight from Los Angeles to abort its landing this morning.

The plane circled for 10 minutes before landing safely back on the runway, a Qantas spokesperson told ABC news.

Strong westerly winds in Sydney as well as storms in Melbourne have interrupted services run by Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Qantas.

An airport spokesperson said the delays aren’t expected to improve and that MORE are likely to occur as the day goes on.

Sydney Airport has recommended passengers contact their airline for updated flight information and subscribe to their flight alert service.

So if you’re travelling today try and avoid the sky.

If you’re really desperate there’s the bus.

Kidding. Kinda.
