Yikes.

Looks like things aren’t working out (geddit?) for an Anytime Fitness gym after their attempt at being funny flopped.

The gym copped major flak online for its ‘funny’ advertising attempt featuring a sign with the phrase, “Are you fat and ugly? Just be ugly.”

Speaking to the Sunshine Coast Daily, local resident Debbie Peut was left reeling after seeing the sign.

“Horrified beyond explanation,” she told the publication.

“How sad that the word fat continues to be used as an insult and a way to define people. Why is humiliating people funny?”

Debbie went to say that the gym’s way of getting free publicity was shameful and harmful to those with body image issues.

Overall, opinions were all over the board with some locals chuffed at the joke, while others joined in on the dislike.

One commenter said:

“I laughed way to hard... this is fantastic! Lighten up people just go to the plastic surgeon and be neither.”

Another woman agreed, saying:

“That is fantastic!! I'm both and would love to be just one!”

Other commenters were not so happy with the sneaky stint, saying it was “rude” and “disgusting”, with one member of the public saying:

“That’s just plain insulting, I don’t find anything funny about it and I have a great sense of humour,” one woman commented.

Saving face, a spokeswoman for the gym said:

“We understand and sincerely apologise for any offence taken from the sign posted outside one of our clubs.”

“The value of being an inclusive, accepting gym where our members feel comfortable and confident when they walk through our doors is at the heart of our business model.”
