Breaking news out of New York this morning with reports emerging that a number of suspicious packages have been uncovered in the city.

According to reports from news.com.au, Secret Service agents have discovered what they believe to be explosive devices targeting CNN's offices in New York, along with Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton.

City Mayor Bill de Blasio gave a statement on the events at about 12:49 pm local time:

"What we saw here today was an effort to terrorize. This clearly is an act of terror attempting to undermine our free press and leaders of this country through acts of violence.

"I want to make very clear that the people of New York City will not be intimidated; we're going to go about our lives undeterred because the very concept of terrorism is to change us and we will not allow that to happen."

Hillary Clinton gave a statement thanking the members of Secret Service who "intercepted the package addressed to us, long before it made its way to our home. Every day we are grateful for their service and commitment."

News.com.au reports that NYPD’s chief of counterterrorism John Miller has shared the packages seemed to be pipe bombs. The CNN building was evacuated and the street beside it was placed under lockdown immediately.

The packages are still being assessed.
