Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May Resigns

"I have done everything I can..."

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May has announced she will officially resign on 7 June 2019.

The Conservative Party leader addressed the nation from outside No. 10 Downing Street in London on Friday, telling the public she would officially resign on 7 June, shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump's state visit. She will continue to serve as Prime Minister until her party's members select a replacement.

In an emotional speech, she blamed her departure on her failure to pass legislation ratifying her Withdrawal Agreement formalising Britain's departure from the European Union (EU), commonly known as Brexit.

"Back in 2016 we gave the British people a choice," she said. "Against all predictions they voted to leave the European Union. I feel as certain today as I did three years ago that if you give people a choice you have a duty to implement what they decide. I have done my best to do that. I negotiated the terms of our exit and negotiated a new relationship with our closest neighbours protects jobs, our security and our union.

"I have done everything I can to convince MPs (Members of Parliament) to back that deal... sadly I have not been able to do so. I tried three times. I believe it was right to persevere even when the odds against success seemed high. But it is now clear to me that is in the best interests of the country for a new Prime Minister to lead that effort."

Her announcement comes the day after Britons went to the polls in the European elections, with the Conservatives predicted to take a hammering from the Brexit Party and parties advocating the U.K. stay in the EU.

She was installed as Britain's second successive Conservative Prime Minister after David Cameron resigned in July 2016 following the outcome of the referendum.
