How To Make It In Radio: Wippa On Ambition
In partnership with CGU Insurance, we’re taking the time to talk ambition. In part one of our ambition series, we sit down with Nova’s own Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli to discuss his journey to personal success.
Where would we be without Wippa?
His ambitious spirit and unwavering commitment to succeed helped launch his career in radio… and now the world can enjoy his quick quips and 10/10 content five days a week!
But where did it all begin? Wippa’s career started with a building management qualification at TAFE. He was working freelance hours and would listen to the radio on the daily. Thankfully his schedule allowed him to dip his toes into the entertainment industry.
“I was at TAFE doing building management and MCing a few gigs. I thought it was fun and at the same time, I discovered a short 10-week radio course. I pursued that and thought it was really exciting”. After completing his radio course, he put together a demo and landed his first radio gig in South Australia.
He knew it wasn’t going to be easy… “there aren’t a lot of openings available” … but that didn’t stop him.
He secured a gig on Nova Perth’s breakfast show and returned to his hometown of Melbourne to join Nova’s national drive show. In 2011, he joined forces with Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald to present Fitzy & Wippa on Nova 96.9 breakfast.
What nugget of wisdom would Wippa pass onto those who want to make it in the radio biz?
“Just get involved. Surround yourself with the right people”.
Radio is a notoriously difficult industry to break into but it’s valuable advice to anyone with a dream to pursue. Let’s make a conscious effort to start backing each other – just as Wippa’s family and friends backed him throughout his career.
We can’t imagine Wippa in any other job – c’mon, he was born to be on the radio! Let’s be grateful for that unwavering ambition and the support he received along the way. Wippa’s experience shows what you can achieve if you’re dedicated and ambitious.
Together with CGU, we’re bringing ambition to the forefront of conversation. So much untapped potential is being left by the wayside. It’s time to break down those barriers and work to become a more progressive and innovative nation. Stop cutting down those tall poppies. Let’s celebrate ambition and get that side hustle, hustling!
