Sam Smith Reveals Heartbreaking Battle With Body Image Issues As A Child
“I had liposuction, I was 12 years old.”
Smith spoke about being self-conscious his "whole life". Shared that he was bullied because he "had breasts". And revealed that he went so far as to have liposuction at the age of 12.
“I had liposuction, I was 12 years old,” he told Jamil.
“At the time I think I was very happy about it. It didn’t really change anything. I think I put the weight back on in two weeks because I hadn’t figured out my relationship with food, so it didn’t really change anything. But being 12 years old and having liposuction on your chest is quite a big deal.”
The 26-year-old musician opened up about the difficulties of struggling with body image and the fact that "even doing this chat right now... it feels a bit weird because guys don't speak about this that much, on a big scale."
He continued, sharing how damaging the pressure to "feel manly" can be:
“It’s the toxic masculinity conversation isn’t that, that’s weighing over all the guys all the time. It weighs over me. It doesn’t feel manly to talk about how I feel in my body every day but that’s what I’m trying to fight against.”
Following the emotional discussion, Smith took to Instagram and shared a photo of himself topless diving into water with the caption, "I'm not ashamed".
When he shared the video of the interview to Instagram he shared that although the conversation made him incredibly nervous, his intention was to help others:
"I really hope this can make someone else who feels like me, a little less lonely and a little less alien xx"
