Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness Reveals He Lives With HIV
“That day was just as devastating as you would think it would be.”
Jonathan Van Ness is a human ray of sunshine. The whole world loves him for all that he is.
The Queer Eye star has come out as H.I.V.-positive in a powerful and revealing profile in the New York Times.
JVN revealed that he collapsed at work in a salon at age 25 – the following day, he went to a clinic, where he tested positive for H.I.V.
“That day was just as devastating as you would think it would be,” he said, adding that he has since embraced his status as a “member of the beautiful H.I.V.-positive community.”
Jonathan said that he was initially conflicted about talking about his struggles with H.I.V given his role on Queer Eye, but ultimately he decided to speak up to combat the stigmatisation of the LGBT community.
“These are all difficult subjects to talk about on a makeover show about hair and makeup. That doesn’t mean Queer Eye is less valid, but I want people to realise you’re never too broken to be fixed,” he said.
In the interview, JVN opened up not only about his H.I.V diagnosis, but his history of addiction and a past trauma that shaped him.
He revealed that he was abused by a older boy at a young age, an experience which he says “planted the seed for other self-destructive behaviours” later in life.
JVN said for him, these behaviours included hooking up with older men in his teens, dropping out of college, and struggling with sex and drug addiction.
Jonathan has been praised online for his bravery and candidness.
It just goes to show that even the brightest lights have some dark days and struggles. There’s nothing braver than being honest and open about life’s crap moments - and we love JVN even more for it.
