Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness Has Come Out As Gender Non-Binary

Yes kween!

You may know Jonathan Van Ness as the resident grooming guru on Netflix’s Queer Eye, being a constant ray of sunshine and/or as that dude you lights up your Insta feed.

He’s the gift that keeps on giving.

JVN is always unapologetically himself and we love him for it. And while the latest slice of JVN realness is not all that surprising, we welcome it anyway.

Jonathan has come out as non-binary, announcing that he “prefers he/him pronouns, but does not identify as a ‘man.’”

In an interview with OUT, Jonathan opened up about his past and his path of self-discovery:

“I didn’t really put [my dressing] that together with ‘gender nonconforming’ or ‘nonbinary’ or owning that as an identity until recently,” he said.

“The older I get, the more I think that I’m nonbinary — I’m gender nonconforming. Like, some days I feel like a man, but then other days I feel like a woman. I don’t really — I think my energies are really all over the place.

JVN told the publication that he's always looking for opportunities to break down binary stereotypes and ways of thinking that cause divides between individuals and community.

“I think that a lot of times gender is used to separate and divide. It’s this social construct that I don’t really feel like I fit into the way I used to,” he said.

“I just am either like gender-bendy or nonconform-y or nonbinary and somedays I feel like a boy and somedays I feel like a girl. I didn’t think I was allowed to be nonconforming or genderqueer or non-binary — I was just always like ‘a gay man’ because that’s just the label I thought I had to be.”

He went on to praise social media for providing people with a space to express themselves in a way that doesn’t have to conform to society’s expectations.

Long story short, JVN is a queen/goddess/positive force from whom we can all learn a thing or two.
