Moulin Rouge Is Can-Canning Its Way To Australia
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return."
Love is a many splendored thing, love lifts us up where we belong, all you need is love… And Moulin Rouge!
It's been 18 years since Baz Luhrmann's musical masterpiece, Moulin Rouge! hit our screens. So, 18 years of wondering "Why TF hasn't a real-life musical been adapted for the stage?"
Well, if you're behind in musical theatre news: it's finally happening. Well, it’s been in the works since 2009, but trying to get the rights takes a long AF time. Any-hoo putting that aside, it’s ready!
Moulin Rouge! took on Boston last year, made its debut on Broadway on Thursday and now, it's can-caning its way home Down Under in 2021.
The stage adaption of Baz Luhrmann's award-winning musical will show at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne, which will undergo a $19.4 million redevelopment in the lead-up.
The Age reports the musical has a fusion of 70 pop songs, from Beyoncé to Lady Gaga to Britney Spears, that echoes the iconic soundtrack. Seriously, someone’s going to have to stop us from trying to get on that stage.
But as for Baz's contribution, there isn't a lot. After creating Strictly Ballroom the musical Bazsaid the experience made him realise he no longer wants to revisit his old work.
Speaking to The Age after the premiere in New York, he said:
"I don’t really want to be making shows of things I made 20 years ago because it’s not honest.
"I can’t be me 20 years ago and that’s why I wanted someone who was like me 20 years ago and that’s [Moulin Rouge! director] Alex Timbers."
Either way, we're just excited for petticoats, top hats and The Green Fairy.
