Liam Payne Called One Direction Fame “Toxic”
“Even if you’re not happy, you’ve got to go out there.”
The world has been without One Direction for three years but it feels like forever.
1D band members - Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Niall Horan - have launched their own music careers and moved on from their boy band days.
Over the years, they’ve each spoken about what it was like to be part of the group.
Most recently, Louis said the bands’ reunion was an “inevitable” possibility.
Now, Liam has spoken out about the emotional toll One Direction took on him. And it’s pretty heavy.
“When you’re doing hundreds and hundreds of [concerts] and it’s the same 22 songs at the same time every single day, even if you’re not happy, you’ve got to go out there,” he told Men’s Health Australia.
“It’s almost like putting the Disney costume on before you step up on stage, and underneath the Disney costume, I was p*ssed quite a lot of the time because there was no other way to get your head around what was going on.”
Like we said, heavy.
Liam goes on to admit that being in the band was fun and the boys “had an absolute blast”, but certain parts of the experience were “a little bit toxic.”
The lingering effects are something Liam still grapples with today. “I still struggle with it now,” he said. “I really struggle to say no because I don’t like to let people down. It’s in my nature.”
This just goes to show no matter who you are or what you have, we’re all humans and we all struggle in our own ways.
We’re glad Liam is doing better. Looks like the band breaking up was a good thing after-all.
Although we’ll forever miss curly haired Harry.
