Margot Robbie’s “Aspirational” Barbie Live-Action Film Set For 2020 Release
Margot is in the Dream House.
Margot Robbie is gearing up to play Barbie in the new live-action film, set for a 2020 release.
The 28-year-old says that the iconic character - who has just celebrated her 60th birthday (with nary a wrinkle in sight) - will be represented in a positive light.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids,” she told PEOPLE magazine.
Speaking to Variety, Margot explained, "Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child's journey to self-discovery.
"I'm so honoured to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide."
Mattel has been in talks about a Barbie film since 2014, when it was announced the toy company had partnered with Sony for the movie.
Amy Schumer was first announced as the star in 2016, but later dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.
After years of delays, Sony’s rights to the Barbie film reverted back to Mattel, who will now produce the live-action remake in collaboration with Margot Robbie’s own production house LuckyChap and Warner Bros.
The film has been given an 8 May 2020 release date on IMDB, but this is yet to be confirmed.
